In January this year, Kasese Woman Member of Parliament Winnie Kiiza revealed that she is willing to stand for the Presidency if the people of Uganda endorse her and pledge their support to her.

The former Leader of Opposition in Parliament is still carrying that will, according to what she said in an interview with Culton Scovia’s HER STORY.

Kiiza started by pointing out that it is time for Uganda to have a female President giving examples of females that have held top leadership positions in different sectors and have executed their duties well.

“Uganda has been ready for a female President for a long time. We have only been held back by cultural stereotypes. Rebecca Kadaga is the first female Speaker of Ugandan Parliament and she has not disappointed. Remember KCCA when we still had Jennifer Musisi? She did not disappoint. I was the first female Leader of Opposition in Parliament and I don’t think I disappointed either,” Kiiza explained.

She added that women have a special quality of leadership and that Ugandans should not give up finding the first female President of Uganda. When asked whether she is that female, she replied, “Yes, If Ugandans think I am the right person, I can do it, if they are ready to walk the journey with me.”

Apart from cultural stereotypes, Kiiza also noted that women might be held back by the too much commercialization of politics and time, saying that women don’t have enough money to use for campaigns, and their time is mostly spent on their families.

A few weeks ago, we compiled a list of Ugandans considered Presidential material, and Winnie Kiiza was included.
