Archbishop Lwanga warns on security forces beating Ugandans
Kampala Archbishop, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has condemned the brutal acts of security officers when implementing government directives on COVID-19.
During the Palm Sunday mass at Lubaga Cathedral yesterday, Lwanga said; “In other countries, people are using masks to cover their mouths to avoid contracting coronavirus but in Uganda, people are rather being covered with canes.” He recommended the officers to peacefully enforce the set guidelines.
Lwanga also called upon Ugandans to entrust God because He is the only one who will takes us through this worrying condition.
“All masses will be broadcast live on our social media platforms as well as different media outlets. Please follow the prayers from your homes and keep praying,” he advised.
The Archbishop said he will lead the main Easter celebration mass starting at 10 a.m. next Sunday. He also pointed out that there will be no baptism on Easter Monday.
Herbalist arrested for selling herb that ‘cures’ COVID-19
Police in Soroti arrested a one Kungu Lazarus, 24, a self-proclaimed mobile Herbalist for duping the public that he had discovered a local herb for curing Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Kungu was found at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital extorting money from patients by presenting them with a red liquid that he claimed cures COVID-19.
World over, there is a global hunt for a coronavirus drug and for now there is no specifically approved medicine to prevent or treat the COVID-19 disease.
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), treatments essentially treat the symptoms, which often in the case of COVID-19 involve fever, cough and shortness of breath. In mild cases, this might simply mean rest and fever-reducing medications.
Man arrested for using ambulance to smuggle bags of rice instead of transporting patients
Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) customs enforcement team at Busitema intercepted a man using an ambulance to smuggle bags of rice.
The officer at the URA customs said instead of transporting patients, the culprit was carrying rice destined for delivery to Kampala. He has been handed over to police pending further investigation.
Earlier this week, President Museveni prohibited all people to people movement by everybody including those using their private vehicles, bodabodas, tuk tuks etc.
Museveni said this was done because some private car owners had turned their vehicles into public transport vehicles “without license”, an act that was against their efforts of preventing the further spread of coronavirus.
Education Minister Janet Museveni reveals schools, Universities and tertiary institutions will reopen this month
In Uganda, over 15 million learners enrolled in the education system at different levels were forced to go back home in a bid to keep them safe from the coronavirus. President Museveni directed that all schools, Universities and tertiary institutions should close for at least the next 30 days.
On Saturday, the Minister for Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Museveni addressed the nation on how the Ministry is trying to cope up despite the existence of the pandemic.
The First Lady said that they have already laid a plan to resume studies but that will only depend on what government will say after the directed days elapse.
Janet Museveni disclosed that Pre-primary, primary, secondary schools, and Primary Teachers Colleges will open for the continuation of Term I on April 27, 2020 up to June 12, 2020. Term 2 will then start on June 22 to September 4 while Term 3 has been scheduled to start on September 21 and end on December 19 2020.
Universities and other Tertiary Institutions, including BTVET institutions, will open continuation of the current Semester on May 2, 2020.
