A wise man once said that in times of adversity, it is better to put our differences on the side and come together as one unit, put our forces and efforts together in order to overcome it. This is true in this current coronavirus pandemic.

We have seen politicians of differing political sides coming together to preach the same things that are aimed at combating the spread of coronavirus so that we can come out of it victorious.

While appearing on NBS TV’s Morning Breeze this morning, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has likened the current state of the country to that of 1986 when the National Resistance Movement (NRM) had just captured power, and political players that time greed to suspend political activity for a time.

“We are back to 1986 where politicians agreed to suspend political activity to fight a common enemy. For the time being, let politics be in abeyance, let us put partisan politics side, come together to fight this common enemy (COVID-19), we will get back to it later,” Lukwago says.

Although he agrees with the suspending political activity for the time being, Lukwago wonders if President Museveni is using the powers granted to him correctly.

“The President’s powers should be checked, how far can he go with those powers that are unchecked?” The Lord Mayor asks, relating that to the fact that government went ahead to distribute food even when Parliament had halted the process until there was a plan to distribute it countrywide and not just in Kampala and Wakiso.
