Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations is arguably the biggest event in Uganda but news reaching on our desk indicates that the celebrations might not happen this year. Bishop Antony Zziwa, the Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference has confirmed the news in a letter to fellow Bishops.

Uganda Episcopal Conference is a body that brings together Catholic Bishops in Uganda and according to the letter dated April 29, 2020, the celebrations have been postponed to a yet-to-be-confirmed date.

Bishop Zziwa said the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has hindered Masaka Catholic Diocese, the organizers of this year’s celebrations from making preparations.

For this, he requested that this year’s celebrations should be postponed given that the threat of coronavirus limits public gatherings.

The annual celebration marked on June 3 brings together Christians from all over the world to remember the martyrdom of several young men that were killed by Kabaka Mwanga in 1880s.
