The possibility of the Ugandan opposition fielding a single candidate against incumbent President Yoweri Museveni must have hit a dead end as Democratic Party (DP) President; Norbert Mao has revealed that he will be running for the Presidency in the 2021 general elections.

While speaking during NBS TV’s Frontline show, without mentioning any name, Mao said some opposition figures are not willing to negotiate.

“I will be running for President in the next general elections. We have candidates who don’t want to negotiate. They say you are too weak, you must rally behind me. There is need for all actors to respect each other,” Mao said.

Mao cited some of the many reasons blocking negotiations that included; mutual suspicion and mistrust, protection of political territory and influence.

With COVID-19 in play, Mao said a lot is going to change come 2021 general elections.

“If you are not going to have mass rallies, politics is very emotional. The new normal calls for silent elections. We don’t know how COVID-19 is going to behave by the end of June,” he said.
