MPs want Gov’t to pay registration fees for PLE, UCE and UACE candidates

Parliament yesterday passed a motion urging government to intervene and meet the costs of examination registration for PLE, UCE and UACE candidates, 2020.

According to the motion mover, Henry Kibalya (MP Bugabula County South), with the short timelines indicated by Education Ministry, there is a strong likelihood that most parents might not be in position to pay the required examination fees by UNEB in addition to the school fees.

Kibalya said that the COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the economy and strained financial resources with the greatest impact being felt by the poorest who are the majority of Ugandans.

MP Joseph Ssewungu defended the motion saying government saved a lot of money when many activities were not carried out during the COVID-19 lock down.

“Let us use that money to pay for the students registration fees. The parents and guardians cannot afford this and they are crying out,” said Ssewungu.

Leader of Opposition Betty Ochan said many schools will not manage to open if the government does not come in to support them.
