The Minister of Education Janet Museveni has revealed that there will be no more nursery or kindergarten schools until the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

The First Lady’s statement comes a day after President Yoweri Museveni announced the reopening of schools for Semi-candidates (S.5, S3 and P.6). Museveni said that government is opening schools in a staggering manner to ensure compliance with COVID-19 Standard operating procedure (SOP) of maintaining social distance, washing hands or sanitizing, and wearing of face masks.  The Semi-candidates will start on March 1.

Though Museveni said that a detailed plan on the reopening of school for lower classes was due in April, First Lady Janet has said that children will now start school in Primary one at five years of age.

“Parents should instead take on the mantle and do play learning with their children at home before sending them to P1,” Janet said before adding that Learners in this category cannot observe SOPs and are prone to respiratory infections.

Janet also revealed that apart from candidates who will have to seat for UNEB exams, the rest of the leaners will not seat for exams as progression for them will be evaluated on attendance and a cumulative assessment.
