MP-elect for Kawempe North constituency Muhammad Ssegirinya’s election hangs in balance after Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) questioned the authenticity of the academic documents that he submitted for nomination.

Ssegirinya who stood on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket defeated incumbent Latif Ssebagala who had represented the constituency for 20 years.  However, Sulaiman Kidandala who was also a challenger in the 2021 race in the area petitioned UNEB, challenging Ssegirinya’s documents.

“We have checked in our records and our findings are as follows; Candidate U005/054(2017) is Nampiima Sarah who sat at Mengo secondary school not Ssegirinya Richard sitting at Pimbas secondary school.

“The candidate U005/754 is Nabadda Maureen who sat at Mengo Secondary school not Ssegirinya Richard at Pimbas secondary school,” said UNEB in a letter.

Latif Ssebaggala seems not moved by the developments saying that Ssegirinya was overwhelmingly voted by the people of Kawempe North to represent them in the 11th parliament.

He said his massive victory over all his competitors should be respected.

“The people of Kawempe North spoke loudly that Ssegirinya should be their MP,” said Latif before adding that nothing for now can stop the MP-elect from being sworn in as his name has already been included in the Uganda Gazette.
