National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has said that he grew up admiring President Yoweri Museveni for his visionary leadership. He said Museveni was a ‘perfect’ leader who he idolised.

“When I supported the NRM, I was sincere in my support for them. I was not doing it out of compulsion,” said Rubongoya during an interview on a local TV.

Rubongoya however revealed that the more he got exposed to several realities in the political arena, he lost admiration for Museveni.

“My turning point to join the opposition was when he influenced parliament to lift the age limit. I felt betrayed because he had made it clear that after clocking 75 years, he was not capable of leading Uganda,” said Rubongoya.

Rubongoya was formerly a great supporter and the National Resistance Movement campaigner before joining NUP Party. He resigned from his well-paying jobs to be able to openly associate with People Power, that later turned to NUP. He has been on the helm of its leadership right from the start.

Nonetheless some still brand him as a spy in the party. When asked about the same he said; “It depends on who calls me a mole. Every political character will have distractions. Some of these things are sponsored by the regime itself.

There have been attempts to buy me out of the opposition, and when that failed, they started propaganda.”

Recently, reports have been making rounds that he’s on the list of new envoys that President Yoweri Museveni is about to appoint.

“I have not been offered any position as an Ambassador, and if it was offered to me, I wouldn’t take it,” he said.
