Minister for Security Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi has dismissed claims that government owns safe houses.

While appearing in the Committee of Human Rights investigating allegations of torture by security forces, the minister claimed that currently government has no safe houses.

Muhwezi said that previously, the government had safe houses but they were used for training officers. He asked the public to expose the safe houses so that they can follow up.

“If there are any safe houses currently, we request that you give us the addresses,” said Muhwezi.

On the issue of torture of suspects by security forces, Muhwezi said that he is slated to present a list of officers implicated in the torture of suspects.

He however claimed that those arresting civilians without proper identification are not security agents

Last month, Opposition MPs tried to censure Muhwezi from office over the continued violation of rights of Ugandans by security operatives. However, the motion suffered a stillbirth.
