The chairman of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, has claimed that the four IEBC commissioners who disowned the final presidential results that saw William Ruto declared winner, had differed after the rest refused to alter them to force a re-run.

On Monday, Chebukati declared Ruto the fifth president of Kenya. However, the Commission’s Vice Chair, Juliana Cherera, and three other commissioners accused Chebukati of conducting an “opaque process.”

However, according to a statement issued by Chebukati, he said that he involved all the commissioners in verifying and tallying but differed during the last minute when they demanded that he moderate the results to force an election re-run.

“During a briefing meeting held on August 15, 2022, at around 3 pm before the final declaration of the Presidential Election results, the four commissioners demanded that the Chairperson moderate the results for the purpose of forcing an election re-run contrary to their oath of office,” the statement read in part.

He believes that the move could have been tantamount to subverting the Constitution and the sovereign will of the people of Kenya.

Meanwhile, Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga on Tuesday said that he will challenge the outcome of the presidential results in court.
