Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, has said he wants to charge $8 (about Sh30k) per month for a subscription plan that would grant users the coveted blue verified checkmark on their accounts.

According to Musk, Twitter Blue, the company’s subscription service, would also allow users to post lengthy video and audio clips and give them priority in replies, mentions, and search results.

Currently, Twitter Blue costs $5 (roughly Shs19k) per month, but it doesn’t have the benefit of a verified checkmark.

A few days ago, reports claimed that Twitter would charge $20 (roughly Shs76k) for a new Twitter Blue subscription and that users would lose blue check marks if they refused to pay up.

Many tweeps vowed to pay no money and appeared fine with giving up on the blue tick.

Twitter provides verified badges to accounts for free after the company determines the user is “authentic, notable and active.”

The blue checkmark is intended to let users know that a celebrity, journalist, politician, or other public figure’s account is legitimate.
