Leaders of National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) president Joseph Kabuleta has been granted bail by the Nakawa Magistrate Court.

Kabuleta has been ordered to pay Shs 2 million in cash, and each of his sureties has been ordered to sign a Shs 20 million non-cash bond.

The former presidential candidate’s case hearing has also been adjourned to January 18, 2023.

Kabuleta was arrested earlier this month for failing to respond to the police summons about inappropriate remarks.

“This follows a police general inquiry that began on June 14, 2022, by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to verify allegations that Joseph Kabuleta and others still at large, made utterances that were likely to create alienation or despondency, raise discontent or disaffection, and promote feelings of ill will or hostility among members of the public,” said the police.

It is alleged that on May 30 2022 in Kampala District, Kabuleta and others held a press conference under their political party, NEED, where they alleged that social service delivery in Mbarara is based on ethnic lines of the Tutsi, Bahima, Bakiga, and Banyakore.

He was arraigned before the court in Kampala and charged with sectarianism before being remanded.
