Amos Lugoloobi, the state minister for planning, has admitted that his arrest and detention at Kira Police Division before being sent to Luzira Prison on remand helped him understand the appalling conditions of police cells and Luzira Prison.

During a Thanksgiving ceremony held at his house in Namulanda Village in Kayunga Sub-county, Kayunga District, over the weekend, Lugoloobi gave a speech during which he asserted that his arrest was a significant eye-opener.

“I think God planned that as minister for Planning, I had to be arrested and subsequently remanded to Luzira prison so that I can witness the bad situation in jail and work towards improving prisoners’ lives,” Lugoloobi said.

Lugoloobi said he is now aware of the appalling conditions in prison and in police cells as he was making his first public appearance since the court granted him bail on Thursday of last week.

He revealed that he discussed the need to improve prison conditions with some members of his ministry who had come to see him while he was in Luzira Prison.

“As a minister for Planning, I am going to engage responsible officials to ensure that the conditions are improved,” he said.

Following his arrest in relation to the improper handling of iron sheets intended for vulnerable people in Karamoja, Lugoloobi spent three days at the Kira Police Division and Luzira Prison.
