Hajji Abubaker Kawooya, the father to the late Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP) Muhammad Kirumira has vowed to drag the government to court over the death of his son.
Afande Kirumira was gunned down on September 8, 2018, on his way home in Bulenga along Mityana Road. He was shot dead alongside a female friend Resty Mbabazi.
Two of the three suspects that were arrested for allegedly participating in the murder were acquitted by the High Court.
Hamza Mwebe was cleared Mwebe of all charges in 2022 while Abubaker Kalungi was acquitted this week (April 24).
Justice Margaret Mutonyi said that the prosecution failed to adduce substantial evidence to prove that Kalungi participated in the double murder.
The other suspect Abdu Kateregga was killed in Namungoona, Kampala by security agents.
While appearing on a local YouTube channel, Afande Kirumira’s father, Hajj Abubaker Kawooya, expressed his satisfaction with the judge’s justifications for acquitting Kalungi.
“The judge explained well that prosecution did not bring evidence to pin Kalungi,” Kawooya said.
Kawooya, however, intends to sue the government for failing to identify the real killers of his son.
“Who killed my son? I want to know. I am already talking with my lawyers so that they advise me on what to do. The first case was reported by the government and it did not serve justice to my dead son,” he said.
Kawooya also expressed his desire to meet President Yoweri Museveni.
“When my son died, the president called me and we talked at length. He placed the case under his office but I wonder how it was given to other people,” he said.
Although death is inevitable, Kawooya said that murdering a person is against the law.
Kirumira was a maverick officer and is remembered for always speaking against the rot in the police leadership.
