The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has announced the postponement of the national census, originally scheduled for August, to an undisclosed date.

The decision was made to allow additional time for the procurement of tablets, as the government aims to adopt a more digital approach for the census.

During a press briefing in Kampala, Godfrey Nabongo, the deputy executive director of UBOS, explained that financial constraints in the previous fiscal year compelled them to seek permission from the Ministry of Finance to repurpose funds for pre-census activities.

Nabongo stated, “Our current focus lies in procuring the necessary tablets, and it is becoming increasingly apparent that the August deadline is not feasible. We are preparing a report for the Ministry of Finance and Cabinet, the entities responsible for setting the date, to seek further guidance.”

The forthcoming census is expected to involve the deployment of approximately 120,000 personnel across various regions of the country to facilitate the enumeration process.

Uganda’s most recent census took place in 2014, with an estimated cost of Shs75 billion and the creation of approximately 150,000 temporary jobs. Uganda’s population is approximately 50,107,399, based on Worldometer’s analysis of the latest data from the United Nations.
