Opportunity Bank Uganda has donated several relief items to people affected by the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill.

Over 50 people remain camped at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School, where the Uganda Red Cross has set up temporary shelters.

While delivering the relief support, Opportunity Bank CEO Owen Amanya said the donation is a gesture of solidarity and support.

“We understand that our clients in Kiteezi lost their businesses and shelter in the landfill collapse. We are taking on their loan obligations to enable them to resume a normal life. This decision is made to ensure that our clients can focus on rebuilding their lives without the added pressure of financial commitments,” Amanya said.

He added, “We have also organized a distribution of essential food supplies to support our clients with the immediate needs of those impacted by the Kiteezi landfill collapse. Our teams will be working to ensure that these supplies reach every individual and family in need.”

Since the excavation exercise started on August 10, the police have recovered over 30 bodies, with about 20 people still reported missing.

Several well-wishers have donated relief items to the victims, while the government is still discussing the relocation plan.
