The DP Bloc, a special purpose vehicle of the Democratic Party, has endorsed Nyendo Mukungwe Legislator and former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga as their presidential candidate for the upcoming 2026 election.

The announcement was made on Thursday at the DP Bloc offices in Kampala. DP Bloc members, led by Michael Mabikke and Lubega Mukaaku, claim that Mpuuga is the best candidate among all opposition members.

They believe he is the only candidate capable of winning against President Yoweri Museveni. The group, which supported Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, in the 2021 presidential election, stated that the National Unity Platform leader has turned against them, as he does not listen to any advice from anyone who is not in their inner circle.

Buikwe Member of Parliament Lulume Bayiga, who subscribes to the Democratic Party (DP), says that DP and the DP Bloc are different organizations, and therefore the DP Bloc’s endorsement of Legislator Mpuuga is not the stance of the Democratic Party.

Lulume states that DP is still embroiled in a party power struggle, and they have yet to consider who will be their presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.
