Police in Katwe have arrested a maid and her boyfriend for kidnapping her boss’s three-year-old daughter and demanding a Shs20 million ransom to fund their wedding and use part of it as capital.

The two suspects, Mary Kansiime and Polycarp Bulombo, admitted to the kidnapping, stating they intended to return to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to start a new life as a couple.

The maid told police officers that the idea to kidnap the child came from her boyfriend, as they needed the money for their wedding and to start a business.

Grace Barakah, the mother of the child and resident of Makindye, reported that her daughter went missing on Saturday while the maid lied about her disappearance. A day later, an unknown caller confirmed they had the child and could only return her after receiving Shs20 million.

The mother decided to involve the police, who traced the phone number and arrested the maid and her boyfriend. She wants the couple to be punished for their crime.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said investigations are still ongoing as the suspects who are currently at Katwe Police Station await being arraigned in courts of law.

Police reminded the public to exercise caution and perform a thorough background check when hiring domestic workers.
