Kawempe North Member of Parliament (MP), Muhammad Ssegirinya, has openly declared that he will be contesting for the parliamentary seat he currently holds in the 2026 general elections.

Ssegirinya, who is bedridden as he recovers from various health complications, says his constituents have shown that he remains their favorite candidate despite his absence from the public eye due to health battles.

“I appreciate the love and courage from the people of Kawempe North. It gives me strength,” said Ssegirinya in a video posted on his social media pages.

The MP stated that the confidence his constituents have shown in him is the reason he will be running again in the 2026 general elections.

He aims to run for office for just one more term, as his first term as MP has been marked by several challenges.

Ssegirinya was arrested along with Hon. Allan Ssewanyana about a year into his first term on charges related to the Masaka panga-wielding killings. He spent approximately two years in prison.

Since his release from Luzira Prison about two years ago, Ssegirinya has been in and out of hospitals, battling lung disease, hypertension, skin cancer, and other complications.

In mid-last year, he was rushed to Germany and later transferred to Amsterdam UMC Hospital in the Netherlands as his condition had worsened beyond what could be managed in Uganda. He was discharged from Amsterdam UMC Hospital in September after receiving treatment for various ailments.

However, his health condition deteriorated a few months later, leading to his admission to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he remained for nearly six months until his discharge in June this year.
