Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been arrested allegedly by operatives of the Special Forces Command (SFC) from his home in Wakaliga, Rubaga Division, Kampala.
Earlier today, Lukwago said his residence had been surrounded by heavily armed personnel as he prepared to take his children to school. He reported seeing several security vehicles, including drone vans, stationed outside his gate, with both uniformed and plainclothes officers deployed around the property.
The arrest comes at a tense moment in the ongoing treason case involving Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Hajj Obeid Lutale, where Lukwago is serving as lead defence lawyer.
The defence team recently boycotted an evidence review session at Luzira Upper Prison, citing restricted access. The accused persons have also declined to physically attend court proceedings in the matter.
The developments at Lukwago’s home also come as his legal team continues efforts to formally serve Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba with High Court documents. On Thursday, Justice Emmanuel Baguma directed Gen Muhoozi to respond within seven days to a petition filed by Besigye and Lutale over alleged threatening social media posts.
Lukwago had earlier confirmed that the Attorney General had been served with the court papers, but said Gen Muhoozi, Col Peter Ahimbisibwe and Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga were yet to be officially served.
Following news of the arrest, Gen Muhoozi posted remarks on his official X account appearing to confirm the development, saying: “He summoned me?? How do you DARE to utter those words? Only Mzee (President Museveni) can summon me. This fool will learn the lesson he has been begging for.”
Authorities have not yet issued an official detailed statement on the circumstances surrounding Lukwago’s arrest.
