The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the complete closure of Karuma Bridge from March 10 to March 31, 2025, to facilitate the installation of critical expansion joints. The maintenance work aims to enhance the structural integrity of the bridge and improve traffic flow along the vital Kampala–Gulu Highway.

According to an official statement from the ministry, the bridge had undergone urgent repairs last year and was partially reopened on December 20, 2024, allowing only light vehicles to pass during the festive season. However, to fully restore its structural integrity and ensure long-term safety, the ministry has scheduled the final phase of the rehabilitation process.

“To complete these essential works, the Ministry of Works and Transport announces the installation of expansion joints on Karuma Bridge from March 10 to March 31, 2025. As a result, the bridge will be closed to all traffic during this period,” the statement read.

Additionally, the ministry has indicated that similar maintenance work will be carried out on Ayago Bridge, located on the Karuma–Olwiyo road, as its expansion joints have been weakened due to prolonged wear and tear.

To minimize travel disruptions, the ministry has recommended alternative routes for affected motorists:

  • For travelers heading to Gulu/West Nile from Kampala:
    • Use the Luwero–Kafu–Masindi–Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park)–Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo route.
  • For travelers heading to Lira from Kampala:
    • Use the Iganga–Nakalama–Tirinyi–Pallisa–Kumi–Soroti–Lira route.
    • Alternatively, travelers to Lira can opt for the Rwenkunye–Apac route via the Masindi Port Ferry.

Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, reassured the public that the temporary closure is necessary for long-term infrastructure stability and road safety.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience this may cause, but these upgrades are crucial for ensuring a safe and reliable transport network. We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation,” the minister stated.

The ministry urges motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and stay updated through official communication channels. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary updates to ensure a smooth transition during the maintenance period.
