Ssentamu Churchill James has officially been elected as the 91st Guild President of Makerere University.

His victory was announced on Thursday following an online voting process, in which he secured a total of 3,459 votes.

Reports indicate that his influence was particularly evident in key colleges such as the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), the College of Education and External Studies (CEES), the College of Computing and Information Sciences (COCIS), and the College of Business and Management Sciences (COBAMS).

Throughout his campaign, Ssentamu focused on student welfare, academic reforms, and service delivery, promising to improve student representation, advocate for better learning conditions, and push for financial transparency within the university.

His message resonated with many students, leading to his resounding victory at the polls.

Ssentamu succeeds Vincent Lubega Nsamba, the 90th Guild President.

Who is Ssentamu Churchill James?

Ssentamu Churchill James is the son of Fred Nyanzi, Bobi Wine’s brother and the Head of Mobilization for the National Unity Platform (NUP).

He ran as an independent candidate after NUP’s pressure group, People Power, endorsed Ismail Basalirwa as their candidate in the guild race. In the People Power primaries, Ssentamu finished second with 214 votes, while Basalirwa won with 232 votes.

Despite this, Ssentamu decided to contest as an independent—a move that initially raised eyebrows but ultimately paid off.

Before winning the guild presidency, Ssentamu served as the Secretary of the Baganda Nkobazambogo Students Association at Makerere University.

In his new position as Guild President, Ssentamu will serve as the chief executive of the student government, lead the Guild, preside over meetings, appoint cabinet members, and ensure that the Guild operates in the best interests of its members, representing students’ needs to the university administration.
