The Electoral Commission has concluded the nomination exercise for candidates in the special interest group elections.

These elections are for village committee positions representing three important groups in society: the youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities. The Electoral Commission (EC) has been receiving nominations since June 2, with today marking the final deadline.

Julius Mucunguzi, the spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, called on all eligible Ugandans from these groups to participate. “Today is the last day for nomination of all those who want to contest, participate, and offer themselves to lead,” he said. Nomination centers at sub-county headquarters, division wards, and town councils across Uganda are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

To qualify, youth must be between the ages of 18 and 30, while older persons must be 60 years or older. Persons with disabilities must meet criteria clearly defined by law. These requirements help ensure that each group is fairly represented in the village committees.

The Electoral Commission is encouraging all eligible Ugandans to get involved, reminding them that participation in elections is a powerful way to make their voices heard. “Your vote is your voice,” Mucunguzi stated, highlighting the importance of this process to Uganda’s democracy.

These special interest group elections mark the first step in the country’s 2025–2026 general elections roadmap. After nominations close today, campaigning will begin on June 12 and continue until June 14. Voting will then take place in stages: older persons will vote on June 16, persons with disabilities on June 17, and the youth on June 19.

This election process gives people from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to help shape their communities.
