The Electoral Commission has completed preparations for the upcoming elections of Village (LC I) Chairpersons and Village Women’s Committees across the country.
Compilation and Display of Voter Registers
Between 6 and 10 July 2026, the Commission compiled two voter registers in all 71,214 villages across Uganda.
These were the Village Council (General) Register, which will be used to elect Village (LC I) Chairpersons and approve members of Village Executive Committees, and the Village Women’s Council Register, which will be used to elect members of Village Women’s Committees.
The registers were displayed on 13 and 14 July 2026 to allow residents to verify their details, including their names, National ID or Application ID numbers, age, gender and village of residence.
Residents were also given an opportunity to report ineligible persons for removal from the registers. The Commission thanks residents and all stakeholders who supported the exercise. Their participation and cooperation helped ensure the preparation of accurate and reliable registers for the elections.
Nomination of Candidates The nomination of candidates for Village (LC I) Chairperson and Village Women’s Committee elections took place from 15 to 19 July 2026 at Sub County, Town and Municipal Division headquarters across the country.
The Commission congratulates all candidates who were successfully nominated and appreciates political parties, organisations and independent candidates who participated in the nomination process.
Complaints and Disputes During the registration, display and nomination exercises, various complaints and concerns were raised by stakeholders.
Some complaints relating to the voter registers were handled by the respective Parish Complaints Committees, while other matters, including those arising from the nomination exercise, were referred to the Electoral Commission for consideration.
The Commission began hearing and determining these complaints on Wednesday, 22 July 2026. The Commission will communicate its decisions and the appropriate lawful action to the affected stakeholders. The public and all stakeholders are urged to remain patient as the complaints are being handled.
Village Women’s Committee Elections Campaigns for the Village Women’s Committee elections began on 20 July 2026 and will end on Wednesday, 22 July 2026.
Polling will take place on Thursday, 23 July 2026, for the five positions on the Village Women’s Committee: – Chairperson – Vice Chairperson – Secretary – Publicity Secretary – Secretary for Finance.
Voting will take place at a public or open place within each village. In accordance with the Local Governments Act, voting will be conducted by voters lining up behind their preferred candidate, the candidate’s representative, portrait or symbol.
The Electoral Commission calls upon all registered women to participate in the elections peacefully and in large numbers.
Village (LC I) Chairperson Elections Candidates nominated for the Village (LC I) Chairperson elections are currently campaigning in their respective villages.
The eight-day campaign period runs from 20 to 27 July 2026. Campaign meetings and public rallies must be held only within the candidate’s village and between 7:00am and 6:00pm on each campaign day.
Candidates are not permitted to conduct physical campaigns outside their respective villages. Polling for Village (LC I) Chairpersons will take place on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, in all 71,214 villages across Uganda, with each village serving as a polling station.
Voting will take place at a public or open place within each village and will run from 7:00am to 4:00pm. The election of Village (LC I) Chairpersons will be conducted by voters lining up behind their preferred candidates, their representatives, portraits or symbols.
The Electoral Commission urges all eligible voters to participate peacefully and exercise their right to choose leaders who will represent their communities.
