NUP’s Derrick Nyeko, who had earlier announced he would not seek re-election in the 2026 general elections, has appeared before the party’s Election Management Committee for vetting. Nyeko is the incumbent MP for Makindye East.

Speaking briefly to the media, Nyeko, who appeared reluctant to comment on his change of position, simply said: “I am here to be vetted.”

Earlier this month, Nyeko, who entered Parliament in 2021 on the NUP ticket, declared that he would not seek another term. In a statement shared on his social media platforms, he described the decision as the result of “deep reflection.”

He also expressed gratitude to his constituents for their support and trust, saying he had served with “honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust” of their vote.

Meanwhile, several contenders within NUP have expressed interest in the Makindye East seat. Among them are former NBS journalist Robert Sekidde, popularly known as Tuff B, as well as James Kayondo, Calvin Bakulumpagi, and Patience Ayesigye, among others.
