The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced significant progress in its ongoing mass registration and ID renewal exercise, revealing that more than three million national identification cards have been produced and dispatched to districts across the country.

According to NIRA’s Public Relations Officer, Claire Ollama, the printed cards are ready for collection at designated distribution centres nationwide.

Ollama reminded citizens that only 24 days remain before the mass registration exercise concludes. The activity, currently being conducted at parish level across Uganda, allows citizens to register for new IDs or update their personal information.

“We urge all Ugandans who have not yet registered or updated their details to take advantage of the remaining days,” Ollama said. “After this period, registration services will be available only at district offices.”

She added that once the registration phase ends, NIRA will launch the next stage — a nationwide mass collection exercise — to ensure that all registered citizens receive their printed cards promptly.

To date, NIRA has enrolled 27.8 million Ugandans in the national database. The ongoing registration drive aims to close the remaining gap and enhance the accuracy of the national register ahead of the 2026 general elections.
