Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga dies in India

Former Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga has died while undergoing medical treatment in India, according to official reports from the hospital where he had been admitted.

Sources said Odinga, aged 80, suffered a cardiac arrest during a morning walk on Wednesday, before being rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His family members, including his daughter and close relatives, were present at the time.

Hospital authorities confirmed the death occurred at around 9:52 a.m. local time.

The former premier, who served between 2008 and 2013, was widely credited with guiding the nation through a period of reconciliation and constitutional reform. Known for his passionate oratory and strong grassroots ties, he became a central figure in shaping the country’s democratic journey.

He also played a key role in negotiating a power-sharing agreement that ended a major political crisis following disputed elections, championing dialogue and inclusive governance.

Until his death, he remained an influential figure in national politics, leading one of the country’s major opposition parties and contesting several presidential elections.
