President Yoweri Museveni has assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that Uganda will address the remaining requirements ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Museveni made the assurance on 22 September 2026 during a meeting with a CAF delegation led by Secretary General Samson Adamu at State House, Entebbe. The meeting was also attended by Uganda’s National AFCON Task Force, led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.
The CAF delegation briefed Museveni on its assessment of Uganda’s preparations following inspections of stadiums, training grounds and other facilities required for the tournament.
CAF Country Infrastructure Manager Bianca Wambui commended the progress made, particularly on the development of stadiums and training facilities.
Museveni said the Government would accelerate work on the remaining requirements, particularly infrastructure in the upcountry host cities.
He directed relevant institutions to speed up work on stadiums, training grounds, roads, airport facilities and accommodation to ensure Uganda meets CAF requirements within the required timelines.
The President said Uganda had demonstrated its ability to host major international events, citing the 2024 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit, which brought representatives from about 150 countries to the country.
“We hosted NAM here, which comprised 150 countries, and we were able to deal with them. The Kampala area has the facilities, but now the challenge is upcountry, which we are now going to concentrate on,” Museveni said.
Single visa for AFCON hosts
The CAF delegation also raised the proposed single visa arrangement for Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to ease movement of fans, teams, officials and other visitors during AFCON 2027.
Museveni said he would engage his counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania to advance the proposal, with discussions on the arrangement already underway.
Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania will jointly host AFCON 2027 under the Pamoja arrangement, with the tournament scheduled for June and July 2027.
Museveni also met the National AFCON Task Force, led by Prime Minister Nabbanja, to review the country’s preparations and the work being undertaken by government institutions involved in hosting the tournament.
