Kampala Metropolitan Police have opened two separate investigations following the disappearance of a young girl and the discovery of a decomposed female body in a swamp in Kyampisi.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the first case was filed on 6 November at Wandegeya Police Station. In the report, Kamuganga Sarah informed police that her daughter, Aneza Merisa, had gone missing.

The second investigation began on 10 November at Nagalama Police Station after a decomposed body was recovered from Musaale Swamp in Namulaba Village. The body, which was clad in a navy-blue skirt labelled “Nanyonga VII”, is believed to be that of a schoolgirl, although the exact school remains unidentified. Police say they are contacting surrounding institutions to establish whether any students have recently been reported missing.

Due to the body’s advanced state of decomposition, mortuary authorities in Kayunga proceeded with burial in a public cemetery.

News of the discovery prompted the parents of the missing child to suspect the remains could be their daughter’s. However, police emphasised that there is no confirmation yet.

“This remains unverified, as the family did not physically view the body,” Owoyesigyire noted.

Police have now sought a court order to exhume the remains for forensic examination. DNA samples will be taken to determine whether the body is that of Aneza Merisa.

Owoyesigyire urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue.

“We appeal for calm. At this stage, no link has been established between the missing girl and the body recovered in Nagalama,” he said.
