The Electoral Commission (EC) has launched a nationwide recruitment drive to hire 35,734 people to operate the newly imported biometric voter verification machines for the 2026 general election.

The number also covers personnel who will train machine operators. All recruits will work on short-term contracts.

According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the Commission is looking for applicants with at least a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. Successful candidates will undergo training to either operate the biometric machines or train others to use them at polling stations across the country.

Mucunguzi said the biometric system will help curb electoral malpractice—particularly ballot stuffing—by ensuring that only registered voters receive ballot papers. The machines will verify each voter’s fingerprints before they are allowed to vote, sealing gaps that previously enabled ineligible individuals to participate.

Every polling station will have at least one machine operator, while more than 1,000 trainers are expected to be deployed per county to prepare operators ahead of polling day.

Recruitment is already under way, and the EC has encouraged eligible Ugandans to submit their applications. Training will be conducted in phases across districts before the machines are rolled out nationwide.
