Security operatives in Iganga District have arrested 17 suspected members of a violent robbery gang following a coordinated intelligence-led operation that also led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles.

The breakthrough follows a failed robbery on 27 September 2025 in Walukuba, Jinja City, where operatives from the Lugazi-based security unit arrested a key suspect, Gumikiriza Allan. During the attempted robbery, one of the assailants was shot dead, and an SMG rifle loaded with two rounds of ammunition was recovered.

During interrogation, Gumikiriza confessed to taking part in several aggravated robberies in Iganga, including the theft of Shs 9.5 million from a businesswoman, Ndagire Justine. He also named his accomplices and revealed that he had conducted surveillance for the robbery together with Magumba Saidi, a 25-year-old resident of Nkono 3 Village in Iganga Municipality.

Acting on this information, a joint security team launched another operation on 20 November 2025 at around 8:00 am, leading to the arrest of three additional suspects:

  • Magumba Saidi, 25, resident of Nkono 3 Village
  • Kakaire Abdullah alias Brown, 36, resident of Igulusa Village, Bukaye Parish, Nakalama Subcounty
  • Mulondo Samuel alias Shadow, 25, a businessman from Nkono 3 Village

The suspects reportedly confessed to participating in a series of armed robberies across Iganga District. They further revealed that the firearm used in most of the attacks had been supplied and stored by a man known as Muzei, a resident of Bugembe Division in Jinja City.

Investigators now believe that the gun recovered in Walukuba is the same weapon used in several of the Iganga robberies. Muzei, who is suspected of abandoning the rifle at the Walukuba scene before fleeing, remains on the run.

Security agencies say operations to track down the remaining suspects and recover more weapons linked to the gang are ongoing.
