Government is set to unblock all social media platforms like X, Tiktok, and Instagram, according to the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
In a post shared on his official X account (formerly Twitter), Gen Muhoozi said: “We are releasing all social media today. I thank all the great people of Uganda for their support and cooperation throughout this electoral season. You are truly the greatest people on earth, and you give us all the courage to serve. God bless you all.”
On January 13, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) announced a nationwide internet shutdown. UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said the decision was taken on the advice of security agencies and was aimed at maintaining stability during the election period.
On January 18, UCC later announced that internet services had been partially restored following a review by the Inter-Agency Security Committee. However, access was limited to websites, email services, online banking, government portals and other essential digital platforms.
At the time, UCC said social media and messaging applications would remain blocked, citing concerns that such platforms could be used to spread misinformation, incite unrest or undermine public order during the sensitive post-election period.
