Bukono County MP Persis Namuganza has officially announced that she will contest for the position of Speaker of Parliament for the 2026–2031 term.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Namuganza said her bid is driven by a desire to strengthen unity, promote transparency, and ensure inclusive leadership in Parliament.
“With a heart full of gratitude and unwavering dedication to our beloved nation, I humbly express my interest in serving as Speaker of the Parliament 2026–2031,” she said. “Guided by a vision of unity, progress and justice, I am committed to amplifying every voice, fostering transparent governance, and building a brighter future for all.”
Namuganza, who represents Bukono County in Namutumba District, is an experienced legislator known for her strong views on governance and parliamentary independence. She recently earned a law degree from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), a qualification that could bolster her credentials in the race.
Her declaration further intensifies competition for the speakership in the 12th Parliament. She joins other contenders who have publicly expressed interest, including incumbent Speaker Anita Among and Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao.
The race is expected to be shaped largely by party positions, especially within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), which holds the majority of seats in Parliament.
The Speaker of Parliament is elected by Members of Parliament during the first sitting of a new Parliament.
