A police officer has died after a speeding vehicle rammed into a security checkpoint in Katakwi District on Sunday night.
The crash happened at around 8:30pm at Getom checkpoint. The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Police Constable Enock Kilobi.
According to Mike Longole, spokesperson for the Police Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), a Toyota Mark X, registration number UBR 151S, was travelling from the Soroti direction when the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle knocked down a checkpoint signpost before hitting the officer. Kilobi died instantly at the scene.
Longole added that another election police constable who was riding on a boda boda was injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Katakwi General Hospital.
The driver survived the crash and was arrested. Kilobi’s body has been taken to Katakwi Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, while police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
