Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao has officially declared his candidacy for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Speaking to the media this morning at the Democratic Party headquarters in Kampala, Mao noted that the initial consultation phase had successfully concluded, and he had resolved to contest the position against the incumbent Speaker, Anita Among.
Mao, who is the Member of Parliament–elect for Laroo–Péce Division in Gulu City, said he is fully qualified for the role and does not see the need for an elaborate campaign. He added that his priorities as Speaker would include promoting accountability and integrity in Parliament.
The Democratic Party President joins a growing list of MPs–elect who have declared their bid for Parliament’s top position.
Minister Persis Namuganza has declared her intention to stand as an independent, while the former leader of the NRM Women League and newly elected Mbale City Woman MP, Lydia Wanyoto, has also announced her intentions to run. Also on the list is Aringa South MP Yorke Odria Alioni, who is ready to contest for Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the NRM Central Executive Committee has endorsed Anita Among for Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker following a meeting at State House, Entebbe.
The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament is scheduled for May this year, with participation limited to Members of Parliament.
