A large fire has broken out at Katwe Market in Kampala, causing widespread damage.
The blaze, which started in the Katwe area of Makindye Division, destroyed several market stalls along with vehicles, including cars and motorcycles that were parked nearby, according to eyewitnesses and videos shared online.
By the time of reporting, the police fire brigade had arrived and was working to bring the situation under control.
Katwe Market is located near Clock Tower along the Kampala–Entebbe highway. The market sits on about 2.5 acres of land close to Katwe playground and a nearby Presbyterian church.
Many traders in the market operate from old and fragile structures made mainly of temporary materials, which may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
