Four people are receiving treatment after an object they were handling exploded at a scrap workshop in Mbale City.
The incident happened on 17 March 2026 as workers were offloading scrap metal. According to police, the group accidentally dropped an unfamiliar metal object, which detonated on impact and left them injured.
All four victims were rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, where they remain under medical care.
A police bomb squad later visited the scene and collected fragments believed to be from the explosive device. The materials have been taken for detailed analysis to determine exactly what caused the blast.
Authorities have urged the public, especially scrap dealers, to be cautious when handling unknown items and to report any suspicious objects to security agencies to help prevent similar incidents.
