Police have arrested at least 78 suspected criminals following a surge in robberies targeting motorists along the Kampala Northern Bypass.
The crackdown comes after numerous complaints from drivers who reported being attacked while stuck in heavy traffic, particularly between Busega and Bwaise. Authorities say the congestion—caused by ongoing road works on the Namungoona–Bwaise section—has created the perfect conditions for gangs to strike.
The repairs, launched by the Ministry of Works and Transport in February, led to the partial closure of the road, resulting in long traffic jams that have left motorists stranded for hours. Criminal groups are said to have taken advantage of the situation, smashing car windows and stealing valuables from trapped passengers.
In one reported case, a businesswoman was attacked in Busega and lost a laptop bag containing Shs 5.34 million, two mobile phones worth Shs 1.3 million, and personal documents.
Deputy Police spokesperson Diana Nandawula said the suspects were arrested during weekend operations targeting known hotspots, including the Bwaise–Busega stretch and Masanafu. She confirmed that the suspects are currently being held at Natete Police Station as investigations continue.
Security operations have also been extended to the Busega–Kyengera swamp area along the Kampala–Masaka road, where similar criminal activity has been reported.
