Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has announced that she plans to retire from elective politics in 2031, ruling out any intention of running for President of Uganda.
Among, who is seeking to retain her position as Speaker, said she feels she has already gone further than she ever expected in her political career, noting that she never imagined leading Parliament.
“I’ve heard some people claiming that I want to contest for the presidency in 2031. That is not true. Even reaching where I am now is beyond what I had planned. I didn’t even expect to become Speaker. By 2031, I will be retiring from active politics. I don’t have the patience to be president,” she said while purchasing running kits for the 52nd birthday run of Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
She added that she prefers to take on roles she is confident she can manage, saying the responsibilities of being a Member of Parliament are already demanding, making the presidency even more challenging in her view.
Among also said she would back the candidate endorsed by President Yoweri Museveni as his successor.
