The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Chairman, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has withdrawn his endorsement of Anita Annet Among and Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The announcement was made by the PLU Secretary General, David Kabanda, during a press briefing at the PLU Secretariat.
Kabanda revealed that he had officially withdrawn a statement issued on 11 March 2026 in which General Muhoozi had publicly backed Among and Tayebwa for the influential parliamentary offices.
According to Kabanda, General Muhoozi has now advised members of the 12th Parliament to withhold their support until Yoweri Museveni, who also serves as National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement, formally names the party’s preferred candidates for the two positions.
The reversal is likely to intensify political manoeuvring within the ruling party ahead of the opening of the new Parliament, with the race for Speaker and Deputy Speaker now appearing wide open.
A number of senior politicians have already shown interest in the Speaker’s position, including Norbert Mao, who is also the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Lydia Wanyoto, Persis Namuganza, Yorke Odria Alioni and Florence Asiimwe Akiiki.
Parliament is expected to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker later this month as preparations for the 12th Parliament gather momentum.
