Security agencies have carried out coordinated raids on properties linked to Speaker of Parliament Anita Among as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption, illicit wealth accumulation and abuse of office.
The operation reportedly began at around 2pm and involved officers from the Crime Intelligence Directorate, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
One of the main targets was Among’s upscale residence located along Mackinnon Road in Nakasero. Security operatives also reportedly sealed off other properties associated with the Speaker in Kololo and Kigo.
Witnesses said her police and military escorts remained stationed outside the residences as the security operation continued.
Sources familiar with the operation say investigators are searching for documents, financial records and other evidence linked to suspected money laundering and unexplained wealth allegedly accumulated during her tenure at Parliament.
The raids come just days after the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected Members of Parliament and less than two weeks before Parliament is expected to elect its Speaker on May 25.
Among, who has been serving as Speaker, had earlier expressed interest in seeking another term in office.
However, reports indicate that during a high-level meeting chaired by President Yoweri Museveni earlier this week, Among was allegedly advised not to contest for the position again and instructed to avoid engaging with Members of Parliament as investigations continue.
She is reportedly being investigated over alleged corruption connected to parliamentary operations, as well as the acquisition of several high-value properties and luxury vehicles.
Meanwhile, reports also suggest that Parliament’s Director of Communications, Chris Obore, was arrested from Mukono in connection with the ongoing investigations, although authorities have not yet officially confirmed the arrest.
By Saturday evening, neither the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Uganda Police Force nor the UPDF had issued an official statement explaining the full scope of the operation or the evidence being sought.
Similarly, Speaker Among and her office had not publicly commented on the raids.
