Police have revised their earlier position on the death of Fahad Lubega, acknowledging that he died following a series of events linked to a suspected fraud case involving a property transaction.

Speaking at the weekly press briefing at police headquarters in Naguru, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke expressed regret over an earlier statement that appeared to dismiss reports of Lubega’s death.

According to the police account, the incident began when a client searching for a rental property on the online platform Jiji came into contact with Lubega, who allegedly introduced himself as a property agent.

The client was shown a house in Kyanja and agreed to rent it at Shs3 million per month. Police say the client then transferred a total of Shs12 million to a Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) account reportedly provided by Lubega.

However, questions arose on June 2, 2026, when the client returned to the property for a second inspection and was informed by the caretaker that the house was not actually for rent, but for sale.

Police say the client was later told that Lubega had gone to DTB’s Naalya branch to withdraw money connected to the transaction.

Rusoke explained that as Lubega left the bank, attempts were made to intercept him, but he managed to evade capture briefly. He was then pursued and later caught by a mob, which allegedly assaulted him before police were alerted.

When officers arrived at the scene, they reportedly found Lubega weak but without obvious severe physical injuries. He was taken into police custody for further handling.

“In my conversation with the officers, they said he was taken to the police station and did not show visible signs of serious injury or torture marks, though he was weak. That is how he passed on,” Rusoke said.

Police have since launched investigations into the exact circumstances leading to his death, including the role of all individuals involved in the pursuit and arrest.

The clarification comes after Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala had earlier denied reports linking a DTB customer’s death to the incident.

However, Diamond Trust Bank later confirmed that Lubega had been at its Naalya branch on June 2, 2026, following a complaint related to a transaction. The bank said the matter was reported to police and that he was subsequently taken into custody for investigation.

DTB also expressed condolences to Lubega’s family and pledged full cooperation as investigations continue.
