A referee was lynched and burned alive by an angry mob in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Reports indicate that Patrick Ngalamulume, aged 36, was attacked and killed during the night of May 5–6.

Local news websites report that the referee was accused of theft before being brutally beaten and burned alive by residents. It is said that no evidence was presented to support the accusation.

The attack reportedly took place in full view of local residents, none of whom were able to intervene in time.

Emergency services were unable to reach the scene before the mob carried out the killing.

The football community has condemned the incident, calling for an independent investigation into the lynching and the arrest of those involved.
