Government has suspended a new policy that would have created different facilitation rates for medical interns based on whether they were sponsored by the Government or private institutions.
Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi told Parliament that all medical interns in the current cohort will now receive the same monthly facilitation of Shs1,268,929, subject to tax.
After taxation, each intern will receive a net payment of about Shs1 million.
Baryomunsi said the Government had decided to suspend the differentiation between Government-sponsored and privately sponsored medical interns, meaning all interns in the current cohort will be treated equally in terms of facilitation.
The Minister also extended the deadline for medical interns to report to their assigned health facilities.
He said interns who had not yet reported will now have until Friday this week to do so. The original reporting period ran from 3 to 14 August.
Government approved 2,417 medical students for internship placements in health facilities across the country.
The changes come after medical interns raised concerns about their welfare and threatened not to report to their assigned hospitals.
The interns had also demanded that Government withdraw the controversial National Education and Training for Health (NETH) policy, which they said had created uncertainty over their training and welfare.
