Ruhamya Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has attained the rank of Second Lieutenant after successfully completing the Officer Cadet Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England.
Ruhamya graduated from the prestigious military academy alongside fellow Ugandan officer cadet Bakyira Ruyondo.
President Yoweri Museveni, Ruhamya’s grandfather, shared a photograph of the newly commissioned officer.

In the photograph, Ruhamya is seen wearing one star, the insignia for the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
“God has blessed me with one of my grandchildren, Ruhamya, joining my big family of UPDF, having graduated, with his colleague, Bakyira, from Sandhurst recently. Congratulations Ruhamya, congratulations Bakyira. Young Ugandans, Army service gives you good foundation. I congratulate the parents of the two young officers,” Museveni said.
Before joining Sandhurst, Ruhamya served in the UPDF with the rank of Private, the lowest rank in the army.
Private is the entry-level rank for newly recruited enlisted soldiers and comes before promotion through the non-commissioned officer ranks.
His graduation from Sandhurst has now seen him move into the commissioned officer ranks.
Second Lieutenant is the lowest commissioned officer rank in the UPDF and is normally the entry point for officers who complete military cadet training.
The rank comes immediately below Lieutenant and marks the beginning of an officer’s career in the UPDF.
Ruhamya’s graduation from Sandhurst therefore marks a significant step in his military career, moving him from an enlisted soldier to a commissioned officer.
