Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has spoken out following the announcement that President Yoweri Museveni had ordered her release from house arrest.

Among has been under house arrest for about three months. On Tuesday, Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that Museveni had directed that she be released.

In a post on her known X account, which no longer carries a verification badge, Among thanked God for what she described as the gift of life and freedom.

“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” she said.

Among also thanked Gen Muhoozi for his conduct during the period she was under house arrest.

“I also extend my gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his professionalism throughout this period,” she added.

The Bukedea District Woman MP said she was looking forward to returning to her work and continuing to serve her constituents.

Among was placed under house arrest about three months ago following Museveni’s directive for investigations into allegations of corruption, money laundering and illicit enrichment linked to Parliament.

The investigations have involved detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), forensic experts and officers from Defence Intelligence and Security, who searched several properties linked to the former Speaker.

The searches were conducted at properties in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and Bukedea. Investigators also seized several high-end vehicles during the operations.

The probe has also led to the arrest and prosecution of several senior Parliament officials over alleged corruption.

Those arrested include Parliament’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs Chris Obore, Director of Human Resource Daniel Adilo, Executive Secretary in the Office of the Speaker Leonard Okema, Principal Research Officer Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu and Principal Protocol Officer Emmanuel Emuron Okwi, among others.

The officials face various corruption-related charges and remain on remand as investigations and court proceedings continue.
