Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan is mourning the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who has died at the age of 66.
Hafidh reportedly died on Monday morning while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar.
The former agricultural officer and academic largely stayed away from the public spotlight, even after his wife became Tanzania’s President in 2021.
Hafidh and Samia married in 1978 and spent nearly five decades together. They had four children — three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir.
Despite being married to one of Tanzania’s most prominent political figures, Hafidh maintained a private life and rarely attracted public attention. He focused largely on his family and his career in agriculture.
His death comes as President Samia continues to lead Tanzania, having become the country’s first female President after the death of President John Magufuli in March 2021.
