Prince David Kijanangoma, elder brother to the newly announced Omukama (King) of Tooro, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has died.
David, who had been battling Stage Three throat cancer for more than a year, died after his condition deteriorated, according to a family member. He had been receiving treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago.
In April, his family appealed for financial assistance to help meet the cost of his treatment as his health continued to worsen.
David was widely known for his high-profile challenge to the reign of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV in 2015. The dispute was later resolved, with the two princes reconciling.
His death comes shortly after the death and burial of King Oyo, as the Tooro royal family continues to navigate a contested succession process.
Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I was announced as the new Omukama by the Babiito Clan Succession Committee on 9 September, days before King Oyo was laid to rest at the Karambi Royal Tombs on 12 September.
