Forty-eight schools that registered candidates for last year’s Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations did not register any Senior Four candidates for the 2026 exams, prompting an investigation by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo said the board was investigating whether the schools had no eligible candidates or whether the failure to register them resulted from negligence by school administrators.
The development comes as 503,055 candidates sit their UCE examinations at 4,514 examination centres across the country.
The examinations began on 12 October, with candidates sitting Mathematics in the morning and Chemistry in the afternoon.
UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Kalule said the examinations started on time at most centres, with examination materials delivered as scheduled despite morning rainfall.
On 13 October, candidates are sitting English in the morning session, followed by History and Political Science in the afternoon.
UNEB has not yet established the reasons why the 48 schools failed to register candidates for this year’s examinations.
